My response to Yang Hyun Suk’s “The idol-fad is over”

30 Sep

CEO of YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun Suk was interviewed recently and in one portion of the interview he said that the “idol fad” is over. Ofcourse this has given kpop fans a lot to think about and made me want to write a post responding to what YG said. I think, it’s best that you read the article if you have not done so already before you read my response. 🙂

When reading this article, my greatest confusion was over the word “fad” lol. Either Yang Hyun Suk actually did say this or it was put in the translation. What I think he meant by this is that the idol “era” is over, or idols being the centre of success in the music industry is over. Idols are the most successful and carry the hallyu wave strongly than ever today. But is this all over?

Yang Hyun Suk is the CEO of one of the big three Korean entertainment companies so in one way he should know what’s going on, but I have to say that I disagree with him. Not just because I’m biased towards idols and want their popularity to only get bigger and bigger, but because I am seeing the results myself of how the hallyu wave is spreading through the force of idols.

In the interview, YG mentioned the market has moved on to artists like Psy and Busker Busker. The whole crazy revolution of Psy and his song ‘Gangnam Style’ is mindblowing. That it is not only at the top end of the charts in the US but also is seeing the same results in the UK (where I live). And the UK is a country that although has many kinds of people living here, is not very open minded and aware of the rest of the world lol. Yes, Psy is considered to be kpop, but he is not your typical kpop; he’s not in a pretty boy -boy band, he’s not in his 20s and known for his chocolate abs (haha) he is however someone that has gained success and caused a storm in his home country just for being different; just for being him. As you can see here from his video below, Psy isn’t making any huge efforts to make it big in the US as he already has a huge fanbase supporting him. J

The thing about Gangnam Style though is that it does not represent the be all and end all of idols and that the world is wanting something new. The song’s success reminds me of the other non-English songs that got to the top of the charts in the US and UK; such as: Las Ketchup by Asereje, Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone. Both these songs were absolutely huge, everyone played them at every party, everyone was dancing along and attempting to sing them, and when the hype died down we never heard from these groups again (atleast those outside their home countries never heard from them again). I think the exact same thing will happen with Gangnam Style. I actually made a comment on allkpop’s article saying this:

I really hope it’s not over 😦 I think Psy success with Gangnam style was just an example of a one time thing. He got lucky. It’s not like the US is gonna be wanting loads of albums from him. It doesn’t mean no one wants rookies. The kpop industry has definitely changed but not in the way that all rookies do not stand a chance anymore. It has only grown. And their success goes not only beyond Korea but beyond Asia as well.

Well that’s basically my opinion on the whole idea of the idol market being past its end. It’s not.

And someone actually made a good point in response to the article:

There is evidence happening to support that the idol market is not at its end. It is growing and new groups are coming out bringing something new to offer.

I was actually quite shocked and had to re-read the sentence a few times to make sure I actually read right when I saw that the interviewer asked YG, “It seems there weren’t many idol groups that performed well in the first half of the year. Why do you think that is?” …Er, hello? Are you kidding me? B.A.P? EXO? The leaders of the Big 3 have continuously agreed that rookies who have been debuting the past two years or so have just been getting more and more talented when it came to dancing and singing and even acting. For the interviewer to say that there weren’t many idols groups that performed well in the first half of the year is crazy! Groups like that who I mentioned before were continuously praised for their image of seeming like idols that have been around for some time. Meaning their talent is like that of a group with a lot of stage performance experience and the same sort of skills. I think the thing that made EXO and B.A.P gain popularity so quickly is their concept that made them stand out and their mind-blowing talent. The rapping of Bang and Zelo; the amazing notes of D.O. and Chen; and Kai… kpop’s new dancing machine.

It also kind of annoys me how people say that kpop is not the same anymore or it is dead now. Did you think that when you first got into kpop that in ten years time groups like TVXQ, Super Junior, and Big Bang would still be all young and cute and dancing around all energetically on stage? The whole music industry is a continuously changing face. Kpop 5 years ago wasn’t the same as it was 5 years before that, and will not be the same is as it is today 5 years later than now. We can’t just have SNSD, Big Bang, Super Junior, TVXQ, FT Island, Wonder Girls, SHINee, 2PM, etc being our only kpop groups and not having any more groups debuting after that. I mean, don’t get me wrong I totally think there are way too many groups debuting at one time. In 2010/2011 there was a continuous influx of new girl groups (I remember once they were even considering making a movie out of the rookie girl group revolution lol); this year is the year of boy groups. But the thing is that some of these groups are actually good and a lot of them do not get the attention that they deserve because the majority of people (including me) are thinking: “Argh, another group’s debuted today that I will not pay any attention to.” And if those very talented groups debuted just a few years earlier they would have got so many attention like they were the shiny new toy in the kpop industry.

I’m sure that the hip hop fans miss what hip hop used to be in the 90s and such, and rock fans miss all those songs from years ago that they used to listen to, but kpop is still as awesome as it used to be (trust me!!) it has just changed, grown, stretched and become more international. From Fin.K.L and S.E.S to SNSD and Wonder Girls to A Pink and Ace of Angels. From H.O.T and Shinhwa to Super Junior and Big Bang to 2PM and SHINee to EXO, Nu’est, B.A.P, BtoB, VIXX, 100% (:D) haha! There are lots of idol groups debuting and more to come but there actually are some groups that are different, stand out amongst the crowd and deserve more of our support. This must be the hardest era of kpop to be successful in for a rookie group.

The fact is that kpop is growing in size shows that the idol “fad” is NOT over and is only appealing to more areas of music and the world. The different generations of kpop are vital to appeal to whoever wants to listen to kpop in that time. I look forward to what kpop has to offer in the coming years and hope to say as a firm supporter of kpop. And YG… I don’t know mayn. I’m looking forward to your SuPearls tho. Lol 😀

Well thanks for reading up til here, I know I can go on and on just to explain my point kekeke

Ridiculous Assumptions Made About Kpop Fans

28 Jul

Firstly, I must apologise for not writing a post in so long; the next paragraph will explain.

So it’s finally time to write another post. You know why? Because I’m angry. I’m angry at the narrow-minded people not just in other countries, but the people that I know personally. Now, I don’t want to disrespect anyone, but seriously I just don’t get how some people’s minds work.

I was actually planning on writing a post like this after reading a post by Angry Kpop Fan and finding that I had been through the exact same thing, being a kpop fan (you probably have too).

The problem is, once I’ve said I’m into K-pop, people (even your my own friends) assume things about me. Even things that I have never said and have never insinuated in the slightest. And to be very honest, it really pisses me off.

The most common, assumation made about me by my friends and my parents is that I don’t just love kpop, but I absolutely love Korean men. Da Heck! Seriously, let’s take a moment right here. How? How did you ever come to that conclusion. I just don’t understand. I mean, in my personal experience, my closest friends have all made the assumtion that I only like Korean men. One thinks that the only reason why I want to go to Korea is to meet a Korean man and settle down! (Ok. This actually makes me laugh). Other friends just assume that because I am a fan of Rain and think that he’s beautiful, it means that I want to marry him and have his babies! What?! Infact, my friends are so convinced that this is my one soul life desire that the subject of me marrying Rain cannot stay out of atleast one conversation that I have with them everyday! And frankly, it’s quite annoying; because FYI, despite me being a Rain fan that doesn’t even call herself a Cloud, I do not want to marry the man and have his babies. OK?

Infact, I want Rain to marry a nice beautiful woman of his dreams now, and have a daughter (because I know he wants one). He’s 30-years-old, so it’s about time (hopefully he’ll meet someone as soon as he gets out of the military). I would not be jealous when he does. I’m always reminding my friends that he’s 12 years older than me and such a huge star that I can never get that close to him to be able to marry him but they still go on.

The reason, that I finally came to write this point today, is that I started to became utterly angry at the assumptions that are made not just about me but about every other kpop fan. The  thing that really got me going today, was when I was watching some Olympic swimmers on the television with my parents, and then one of the commentators started talking about this Japanese swimmer that was apparently the next big thing in that area of the sport and was really famous in Japan. The commentator then mentioned that the Japanese swimmer (I can’t remember his name) has thousands of followers on twitter, proving his popularity. My mom then turned to me and said in the most patronising tone, “Are you following him as well?”

Me: Why would I do that?

Mom: Because he’s…

Me: *Seeing what she was getting at* Because he’s what?!

Mom: Because he’s Oriental.

Just straight out blunt like that, she just inferred that I would follow anyone on twitter just because they are Oriental, like I have some kind of socio-pathical fetish for Oriental people. And just like my friends, she had absolutely no evidence to think that of me, but she went ahead and thought it anyway. My own mother! WTH!

In that situation, I refrained from saying anymore, out of respect. On the inside I was FUMING, but I kept my mouth shut not wanting to create an argument. But if I had created an argument, I probably would have put my point across that I’m not the socio-path my mother thinks I am. If reality would go the way I would want it to, then I would charge into the room that my parents are in, and yell: I DO NOT HAVE AN OBSESSION WITH ORIENTAL PEOPLE!

I mean, what gets to me, is that I really do not know why they think this about me, because I have done nothing to make them think that way either. The things that I have  told them (because that’s all there is to tell them is that:

1: I listen to K-pop (I did not say Korean music*)

2: I watch Korean dramas

3: I have had Korean food (that’s just two meals, TWO MEALS, so it’s not like a regular thing)

4: I run a fanbase (didn’t tell them who it’s for, I don’t want them to find it) and a kpop blog.

That’s all there really is, plus I’m in to Korean culture. I mean, in all of my room I only have two kpop posters on my wall (EXO-M and EXO-K) and I only have a few physical kpop albums aswell. They don’t even think I’m obsessed with Kpop, my Mom thinks I’m obsessed with everything Asian (which is far from the truth) and my Dad thinks I like all things Korean.

Whilst we were watching the Olympic swimmers on TV, my Dad started to question me about if I’m interested in Korean sports people and I was: HELL NO. He knows I’m not interested in sport, so why would my head turn just because the sports people are representing Korea? My Dad even said I should probably do research on which South Koreans that are participating in the Olympics are likely to win gold medal this year! I was like: Why would I do that?

-_-

*It’s like, I said I like Kpop last year and then, my Dad sent me this video on YouTube of this random Korean man performing an American jazz song on a Korean music show. -_- I don’t know what you’re trying to do, Father; but if there is a song that a Korean man is singing, I will not just  like it because a Korean man is  singing it. OK?

~~~
So just to set some things straight:
  • I am not only attracted to Korean men. Yes, after being immersed into the world of kpop, I am much more open-minded to the different people of the world and I am more attracted to Korean men because of this (maybe, I dunno why) but  that’s just it. I like men of many different racial backgrounds to point where race does not bother me, so I would prefer it if you do not assume I love Korean men only, because that’s not true.
  • I am not obsessed with Korean people. I’m not a socia-path with a strange fetish for all people of Korean descent. The other day, I played at a music event, where some Korean people were selling pot noodles. I did not get suddenly happy when I found they were Korean, infact, I was debating over whether or not I should practice my Korean skills on them or not lol. Don’t get me wrong, I love Korean people, all the Koreans that I have met were all so genuinly kind to me and didn’t seem to judge or anything, but you know, I don’t fangirl over every asian person that walks my way in the street.
  • I do not love all things to do with Korea, or to do with Asia. I am not into Anime (I actually am not into Japanese culture at all), I do want to go to a few Asian countries that interest me (i.e. Indonesia (Hello to my Indonesian readers :D), Hong Kong, Singapore (maybe), but Korea is still the promise land. And don’t get me wrong, I do not like all these Korean either. There are a few laws that really piss me off about Korea; mostly to do with sexual exploitation, child protection, and animal welfare. Even within kpop, it has come to my attention that there are many dodgy Entertainment companies operating just to sexually exploit young hopefuls that just want to became famous singers. It’s plain out wrong, even in the way some of the bigger companies treat their artists with killer schedules (T-ara). I am very well aware that there is a dark side to everything even kpop. Even though there are things I don’t like about South Korea, there are much more things that I do like which makes that country the ultimate promise land, like I said 😀 …Oh! And another thing, I am not interested in what’s going  on in sports even if it is Korea (I will support South Korea though because I want to do well, but sports generally isn’t something that interests me, except for some Tennis and Figure Skating ~that’s where Kim Yuna comes in.)
  • I do not want to be Asian, or Korean. I love the language, kpop, culture, food, and I did not grow up with a culture like this, or am descented from a country with such an interested culture but I am happy with who I am, and I would NOT change to be anything different! 😀
So there you go, if you read, all the way to the end, then I am very grateful to you for being interested in what I have to say about this. Ultimately, I do not get too annoyed most of the time at such assumptions made about me when I mention I like kpop. I believe it’s your choice to be offended at what someone says to you, and I choose not to be offended at such narrow-mindedness, but there’s one thing I want to ask YOU!
As a kpop fan, or even if you’re an Anime fan, have you ever had people assume things about you, based off of that? Like, do people automatically think that you’re only interested in Korean men? Or Korean girls? Or that you’re obsessed with Asia or Korea, or Japan? Please tell you in the comments below, or just tell me what you thought of this post. Did I entertain you? I sure hope I did, I do try my best. 🙂
Anyway, thanks for reading, it means a lot!
My Bias List..
KPOP Terminology: “Bias”: the favourite group a kpop fan has or the favourite member of said group the kpop fan has 🙂
This is a concept that kpoppers get very excited when talking about it. The list of top favourite groups and their biases from those groups. This subject is something that I find very interesting when hearing about others’ bias lists and I always have fun sharing mine on the internet in some form. The rest I will include in a less detailed form.
My bias list will include my fav groups (from most favourite to least favourite); my bias in that group and my favourite song from that group.
I’ve never done it in full though, so as someone who loves a wide spectrum of k-pop groups, my bias list is long but I will only explain my absolute top groups that I follow the most and love the most and get me excited the most! So… here we go!
 #3: EXO
EXO tteona oneul bame!
Right now, I’m like completely and utterly obsessed with EXO. Like you would think that they’re #1 on my bias list becuase they have totally changed my life around. I was never even like this when I actually acted as a hardcore VIP, but from a further perspective, BIGBANG are still my further number one (even though I really don’t like their sudden change in style) and EXO come 3rd on my bias list probably because I still have a way so to go in growing with EXO. It is actually a fear that EXO really will become #1 someday. I actually do not want that to happen. But  if Big Bang venture away from what made me fall in love with them in the first place, then…
But ANYWAY! It’s time to talk about why I love EXO so much!
From that day back in January 2011, when SM released news about a new upcoming boy group with the code name ‘M1’ I knew that they were going to be HUGE! Just looking at how quickly SHINee rose to pure success, and then the whole timing of EXO, as the Hallyu wave was getting bigger and more wide spread, I just know that EXO were going to be even more successful in even less time than thier seniors SHINee.
We heard a bit more news from SM about this M1; the whole splitting to promote in China and Korea at the same time, I admit, I didn’t really like that idea, but I still know I was gonna support them because being trainees of SM, I knew EXO were gonna be amazing dancers and singers and just EPIC!
By the time SM released the very first teaser (Kai)… THAT WAS IT! I had been totally convinced that EXO were going to be the greatest group in HISTORY (pun intended)! I remember fangirling about how Kai must be the dancing machine of EXO and how totally looked like a more manly version of SHINee’s Taemin! And I LOVE Taemin; so it was just awesome!
 By the second teaser with Kai and Luhan, I was practically WORSHIPPING the group. The way the two of them danced in sync like that was just amazing. Then Tao came out with the third teaser. I thought he was some Kung Fu master being from China and all. I remember being so hyped up after that I was writing in my diary, that I’d put him up for a fight with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan and he would win! Crazy, but Tao in that teaser, really impressed me.
Throughout the period where all the teasers were released I just completely fell in love with Kai and I remember everyone started to dislike him because he appeared in more teasers than everyone else. But I think that’s not right to be that way, even though some members like XiuMin, Chanyeol and Chen should’ve definitely had more teasers, most of the teasers were dancing and Kai is the dancing machine, so he obviously would appear in more. I don’t think SM was favouriting him like people said, afterall, ALL members of EXO are unbelievably BEAUTIFUL.
But anyway, moving away from the teasers and onto EXO as a fully established debuted group. All 12 members just seem like absolute perfection to me (even though Luhan seems a little evil sometimes…). All the pairings and shippings ~ GAH!!!! EXO are definitely an SM Entertainment group.
The music video for ‘MAMA’ was thr greatest music video in kpop HISTORY! Lol. I love how they all have super powers and their symbols that match their super powers. Their talent is even better than I though it would be, with the dancing and D.O. and Chen’s vocals. Even though I don’t understand what they are singing unless I look up the English translations, I can actually feel their singing and that is just an amazing ability to deliver such emotion through your singing like that. D.O. and Chen are definitely my favourite vocals in EXO.
EXO are GREAT!
EXO will be LEGENDS!
Favourite song: MAMA
“MAMA” *raises hand to the sky to imitate worshipping EXO.*
Lolol. This song. Man. This song is just EPIC! From the day it was performed at EXO’s showcase in Korea to this day, it has just not gotten old. Usually I would not be able to listen to a song everyday like that and not get  bored of it. There’s something about this song where you just love it more and more everyday. It’s very very different from other k-pop songs. It incorporates different genres and it talks about a serious issue about how we as humans have become towards one another. Usually k-pop songs are about love/crushes and it’s hard to find a really deep and meaningful song like this. Also, the fact that the song was composed by the legendary Yoo Young Jin makes it even better. For those who don’t know him by his name, he is just the greatest producer in the whole WORLD; he created the magic of many SM hits like ‘Sorry Sorry’ and many many more and is the creator of that famous SMP sound of SM Entertainment. I LOVE YOO YOUNG JIN ❤
On a side note, I remember when I first heard ‘MAMA’, it reminded me of Super Junior’s ‘Don’t Don’ :3 Lol. I really really love the song, I think it’s just an absolutely EPIC song for EXO to have debuted with. It’s sounds equally awesome in both Chinese and Korean.
Member Bias: Kai ♥♥♥♥
*sighs* My husband, Kai. That’s right ~ he’s mine! Lol!
I could really go on talking about Kai, but really… I’ve written a lot on the last two sections of this post, so I will purposefully make this one short. ^^First of all, isn’t he so beautiful. It didn’t take me long before I was totally obsessed with him. From the first teaser, I just thought he was really cute and looked like Taemin, very soon after that, his dancing and sexiness just made me fall in love, and then I saw how cute he was in his personality. He’s a completely different person to how he is on stage. He has so much charisma and is so intense when he gets in the zone to perform on stage and the way he plays with the fangirls. Then just normally, he’s just the cutest thing. The way he gets embarassed so easily.  From the showcases up until now, I feel like I’ve watched him grow along with the other members and it’s just awesome to take this journey with them all side by side as a devoted fan. I am really impressed with his dancing skills. The way he moves is like he’s just flowing and it’s like he’s one with the music when he dances; because every move he makes matches the music perfectly.
You can see that quite well in this clip of his practice with Gregory Hwang and Eunhyuk for the SM Orchestra dance.
On top of that, his dancing is just really interesting and entertaining to watch. And that’s a big thing that caught my eye in the early days of knowing Kai. Also… he’s just so beautiful. He’s really handsome, and sexy and cute at the same time and the way he shows that when he’s on stage makes me CRAZY. I really don’t know anyone like Kai. He just AMAZES ME!
Kim Jong In ♥
We’ve reached an end to this part of my bias list. The cringy fangirling stops here! Lol! Be sure to tell me you’re bias list in the comments below. If you like, you can answer the questions: Who is the top 5 in your bias list? Bias group – bias members – favourite song.
My Bias List
My Bias List..
KPOP Terminology: “Bias”: the favourite group a kpop fan has or the favourite member of said group the kpop fan has 🙂
This is a concept that kpoppers get very excited when talking about it. The list of top favourite groups and their biases from those groups. This subject is something that I find very interesting when hearing about others’ bias lists and I always have fun sharing mine on the internet in some form. I’ve never done it in full though, so as someone who loves a wide spectrum of k-pop groups, my bias list is long but I will only explain my absolute top groups that I follow the most and love the most and get me excited the most! The rest I will include in a less detailed form.
My bias list will include my fav groups (from most favourite to least favourite); my bias in that group and my favourite song from that group.
So… here we go!
#1: BIGBANG
Big Bang are forever my #1, even if other groups debut and seem like absolute perfection (EXO). Big Bang might not be the best dancers in kpop as a group, or even the best singers in kpop as a group, but there is so much to love in Big Bang. They are definitely unlike any other group in kpop ~ in the WORLD even. Their music is unlike anything I’ve ever heard; it is of such high quality, and that it what Big Bang is known for; their amazing music (thanks to our GD). Even though their music style has completely changed over the years from ‘LaLaLa’ to ‘Fantastic Baby’, when all their voices come together you know that it’s a Big Bang song. Daesung is one the most powerful singers in Korea, Taeyang is one of the ‘dancing kings’ in k-pop, GD is one of the best producers in the world, and Seungri is just an amazing all around entertainer – on stage and in variety. …There’s so much more I could say to express my love for this amazing group ~ they’re just AWESOME OK! xD
Member bias: T.O.P
You probably saw that one coming…LOL. Where do I start with TOPuu ~ he’s my all time favourite rapper in the whole entire world. I love him!
From the very start, when I first saw Big Bang in their ‘Lies’ MV, TOP caught eye automatically, my attention carried on being on him since then and he’s been my absolute favourite rapper ever since. On top of being my favourite rapper, he is also in my top 3 favourite actors along with Rain and Lee Byung Hun ♥
One thing that I love about him is that he is a real rapper he’s not manufactured in the slightest. This man is also truly a POET I tell you. There are many instances where he’ll go into the studio, write down whatever is on his mind and then record it the very same day. When I look at the English translations for his songs they are written like poetry. I swear! This man is a genius!
There is so much that I love about TOP; his peircing gaze, his voice, his height lol, his humour, the way he thinks. He’s such a real genuine person with all his fame all over the world and I love him for it. ♥ 최승현 사랑해  ~~BOOM SHAKALAKA!
Favourite song:  ‘Lies’
*sighs* Aah! The song that got me into k-pop. I’m not joking, I freakin owe my life to this song. ‘Lies’ totally changed my life around. I mean, I was a Wonder Girls fan before I heard this song, but I never did look into kpop while being a WG fan, and then one day I came across ‘Lies’ through an AMV I watched and I straight away fell inlove with the song, looked more into Big Big, found out about the ‘WonderBang’ period and I was from there on obsessed with kpop.
I really do love this song. And I love how it’s one of Big Bang’s biggest hits. And T.O.P’s finger dance (?) in his rap is AWESOME! I can’t listen to the song without doing that dance (unless I’m in public lol).
So uh… because I’ve written quite a lot on just my #1 in the list, Big Bang, I think I will the leave rest of the list to another post and try and say less lol. Unless you want to read more…? From now, I will leave you with some Big Bang pictures and alsp with the question: Who is the top 5 in your bias list? Bias group – bias members – favourite song.
Leave your answers in the comments below. I would LOVE to read your bias lists so  please tell me, arraseo?
